I JUST REALIZED SOMETHING
WHEN AUGUSTUS SAYS THAT IT WOULD BE A PRIVILEGE TO HAVE HIS HEART BROKEN BY HAZEL
THEY ARE IN AMSTERDAM
AND HE KNOWS HE’S DYING
AND THAT HE WON’T LIVE TO BE HURT BY HER
BUT HE’S SAYING THAT IT WOULD BE A PRIVILEGE TO LIVE THAT LONG, LONG ENOUGH TO BE ABLE TO FEEL THE HEARTBREAK CAUSED BY HER DEPARTURE BECAUSE HE WOULD HAVE MORE TIME THAN THE DOCTORS THOUGHT
THIS FUCKING BOOK
what have you done
it probably seems like i cry over stupid shit but tbh i usually end up crying because i’ve stored up all of my upset feelings from multiple things rather than express them and then the littlest thing sets me off like spilling my drink may not be that big of a deal but when i’ve stored up that many negative emotions it feels like i busted a hole in the hoover dam
goes to type “eyebrow”
I am SO. FUCKING. HAPPY. We didn’t get the initial draft of this film. Like, no. Anyone who wants to rip this story apart, uh, okay, do your thing, but JFC, at least it wasn’t the first draft. Shane Black needs to take a really fucking hard look at the narratives he inevitably assigns his women.
But yes. Then she killed him a lot, with fire!
I’m also seriously amused at how feminist this film was and how it’s basically an illustration on how shitty a choice it is to be an entitled douchebro who thinks the world owes him something for his intelligence. And that Tony only makes it out the story because he’s on that path and realizes he owes something to the world.
I love that you can also see Pepper being hurt and terrified and just helpless in the face of this horrible, shitty situation. She’s been kidnapped and tortured and then basically told that she doesn’t matter to the person doing it. Her work, her life, her efforts mean nothing to Killian in the face of pulling one over on Tony. But it’s not a surprised face. Because the worst thing, the worst thing, the worst thing, is that this isn’t the first time. It likely won’t be the last time. As far as she’s come, CEO of a multinational company, to Killian - and, lbr, the outside world because it FUCKING SUCKS I HATE EVERYTHING - she’s still a means to an end. Which, as anvil-y as it is, is why I fucking cheered when we get Tony telling Killian Pepper is perfect. Because for Tony, Pepper is the end. And BLESS HIM for his turtle-like maturing - SLOW AND STEADY, BUT CONTINUAL - and realization that Pepper isn’t lucky to be with him. He won the goddamn lottery because he is with Pepper.
Short answer: I wouldn’t give one single goddamn about Tony Stark if Pepper weren’t in the narrative. And Killian went and died in a fire, so fucking HA.
Yeah, see, that’s the one reason we all love Tony: because he cares. Because he learnt to care. Tony got out of the cave in Afghanistan because he realized he owed something to the world. He gave the War Machine armour to Rhodey and tried to set things as right as he could in the time he had when he thought he was dying because he realized he owed something to the world. And it’s in IM2 (well, it does start in IM1, but little hope is held out there) that you see him realizing how much he needs Pepper - after he gave her his company. I’ve never seen a ‘she’s lucky to be with me’ attitude from him. He loved her as a person long before he loved her as an SO - it just took him years and years to realize that
because he’s an idiot, but he did make amends eventually, you have to give him that. He’s always known she’s perfect, he has always counted himself lucky to be with her; it’s just more evident in IM3. And I love IM3 for explicitly showing that, for letting them both be vulnerable and both powerful. Showing Tony triumphant in no small measure because he values Pepper where Killian valued nobody. After all, that’s a fundamental difference between many heroes and many villains, isn’t it, value for the lives and the being of others?
I will fight anybody who says Tony should have gotten to finish off Killian. The narrative owed vengeance to Pepper, not Tony, because kidnapping and violating her safety is a strike against Pepper, WAY more than it is against Tony. It’s one of the very enjoyably meta things about this movie is that Killian goes along with the standard “hurt the woman to hurt the hero” thing (where Killian robs her of her agency and then the narrative further robs her of her agency by denying her any opportunity to be proactive about it) and then Pepper/IM3’s narrative flip it around on him/the standard and go NOPE you fucked with her, and she’s angry and powerful and now she’s going to end you.

The idea that nerds are awkward and don’t ever socialize is the stupidest stereotype ever because like
Have you ever seen two nerds together?
HAVE YOU EVER SEEN A MONTHFUCKING CONVENTION?
Give us a topic of a common interest and we’ll socialize way past what normal people can tolerate.
